Transitions Take Time

چکیده
Extended Abstract Abstract In this article we take a rather diierent view on models for real-time systems. First of all, transitions are not instantaneous. They really bear time changes. Secondly, the model is of geometric inspiration (following the intuitions of 16]). It is intuitively clearer than other models in that executions can really be pictured as curves (or \trajectories"). Finally it is based on a model of true concurrency which can express scheduling properties. We present the model in a very progressive way, starting from ordinary transition systems, then going through some truly concurrent operational models, to end up with a fully formalised model for real-time systems. The model (timed higher-dimensional automata or timed HDA in short) is made into a category where morphisms are simulations. It is shown to have many interesting algebraic (complete, co-complete, cartesian closed, monoidal closed) and computer-scientiic properties (the timing laws are given naturally by the categorical combinators). A discussion of important matters such as fairness and Zeno is also provided.

Predicting Critical Transitions in ENSO Models. Part I: Methodology and Simple Models with Memory
A new empirical approach is proposed for predicting critical transitions in the climate system based on a time series alone. This approach relies on nonlinear stochastic modeling of the system’s time-dependent evolution operator by the analysis of observed behavior. Empirical models that take the form of a discrete random dynamical system are constructed using artificial neural networks; these ...
متن کاملHow long will it take? Conceptualizing the temporal dynamics of energy transitions
Transitioning away from our current global energy system is of paramount importance. The speed at which a transition can take place—its timing, or temporal dynamics—is a critical element of consideration. This study therefore investigates the issue of time in global and national energy transitions by asking: What does the mainstream academic literature suggest about the time scale of energy tra...
متن کاملLearning PDFA with Asynchronous Transitions
In this paper we extend the PAC learning algorithm due to Clark and Thollard for learning distributions generated by PDFA to automata whose transitions may take varying time lengths, governed by exponential distributions.
متن کاملClass Transitions and Two Component Accretion Flow in GRS 1915 + 105
The light curve of the galactic micro-quasar GRS 1915+105 changes in at least thirteen different ways which are called classes. We present examples of the transitions from one class to another as observed by the IXAE instrument aboard the Indian Satellite IRS-P3. We find that the transitions are associated with changes in photon counts over a time-scale of only a few hours and they take place t...
متن کاملTransitions of Affective States in an Intelligent Tutoring System
This paper aims to determine the natural transitions that take place among students‘ affective states while using SQL-Tutor, a constraint-based intelligent tutor that teaches Structured Query Language (SQL). Intelligent tutoring systems, such as SQL-Tutor, have been used by various institutions to overcome the difficulties of students in learning difficult subject matter. In this paper, the res...
متن کاملTime and Concurrency - Three Approaches for Intertwining Time and Petri Nets
Time and Petri nets-do they not contradict each other? While time determines the occurrences of events in a system, classic Petri nets consider their causal relationships and represent events as a concurrent system. At first, these two appear to be at odds with each other, but taking a closer look at how time and causality are intertwined, one realizes that time actually enriches Petri nets. Th...
